[ the air was hot, the sun merciless as it heated paved streets and sidewalks. summer was in full swing and the fact that she was sweating aside, Hiyori was enjoying the walk to Kofuku's home. the thought that the aforementioned deity more than likely had something cold to drink in the fridge sped her feet along — just slightly — eyes lighting up at the sight of the familiar building.
carefully, she slipped out of her sandals; giving a light knock on the door frame before poking her head inside. ]
Kofuku? Daikoku?
[ a pause, waiting for some sort of reply — but upon receiving none, Hiyori instead turned and sat on the front porch. it was unlike the two to go out, given Kofuku's tendency to ruin... well, everything. ]
Either way, I'll just wait until someone comes back.
[ leaning back onto her hands, she exhaled a sigh; lifting her face to the sun and basking within it's glow. ]
( hot. . . this kind of heat was sweltering, which yukine still thought was distinctly unfair because if he had to be dead, he should at least get to enjoy the perks of not being affected by temperature. as it was, he had spent most of the day melting into the attic floor while a lone fan blew more hot air his way in a vain attempt to relieve his misery. how was he supposed to get anything done like this? he wanted to at least straighten up the room. or something. anything to pass the time while yato, daikoku, and kofuku were out.
shopping, they had said. daikoku promised popsicles, but there was a kind of glint in both yato and kofuku's expressions that meant. . . they weren't going to make it back any time soon. it was kind of a huge oversight on daikoku's part to take both of them, but yukine wasn't going to stop him if it meant not having to listen to all of the complaints he had about the heat being vocalised by yato. sometimes you just gotta let others figure out their mistakes for themselves. hopefully whatever market they imposed their presence on would still be standing by the time they're done.
he was almost getting content to fall asleep until he heard the sound of. . .? is that hiyori? he's upright within seconds and changing his clothes in a flash. he doesn't want to come greet her in dirty sweat-soaked clothes!
as soon as he's dressed, he comes padding down the stairs to come see her. )
I think it's going to be a little bit before they get back. It's just me for now.
[ the sound of footsteps, a familiar voice (and equally familiar scent). tilting her head backwards, the sight of Yukine fills her gaze; expression lighting up with a smile. ]
So they did go out? How unusual...
[ still, she wasn't about to complain, the other's company was a much nicer option than being alone. shifting a bit, Hiyori moved over, patting a spot next to her to indicate that he should come sit. ]
I'm glad you're here, though. I have some new books for you!
Grocery shopping. I'm not sure how successful they'll be though.
( there's a little laugh as he moves to sit down beside her.
then immediately perking up at the knowledge that she brought him some more books. he's already gone through the others at least twice since he has way more free time than he knows what do with sometimes. )
Really, really? ( trying to look for them. ) What did you bring?
[ despite her pity for the man, a smile still finds it's way to the corners of her mouth; her attention shifting to the other as he sits. the change in his expression delights the part of her that likes to spoil him — making a grandiose gesture of hiding the bag she had tucked beside her. ]
Hmmm...! You know, I'm not sure I remember... It must be the heat affecting me.
[ she's teasing, of course; giggling at the sight of him trying to locate his present. ]
( which is probably true, all things considered. daikoku seems like the kind of guy to enjoy the chaos and abuse despite the fact that he totally deserves better. )
Oh yea? Maybe—Maybe I just gotta find it for myself!
( which he tries to achieve by leaning against her and trying to swipe the back from behind her. )
[ as exasperated as she gets with Yato at times, she has to admit that knowing him is never knowing a dull moment; which is nice, in it's own way.
thoughts are interrupted by Yukine suddenly making a grab for his present, eliciting a gasp of surprise — followed by the very abrupt realization of his body pressing up against hers. ]
Ah!
[ she's flustered and convinced this was his plan all along. efforts to keep the game going are in vain and finally she concedes her defeat, grinning as she hands over the bag. ]
They're workbooks from this past year. I also raided the school's book sale and managed to find copies of some of the novels we've read in class too!
( good thing there was never such a plan because there is an extremely low chance that yukine would be able to pull it off with anything even resembling a straight face. it's too embarrassing. he couldn't do it, not without getting flustered and stumbling. he doesn't even realise that he's too close until they are— definitely are, undeniably are—and his fingers are brushing against his present.
he doesn't touch it for longer than a second before he's recoiling away with a twinge of pink flushed across his cheeks. he laughs a little, just a touch awkward, before she's relenting and handing over the gift anyway. )
( he's seen her bring them over countless times to go through them herself during their study sessions while he worked his way through the homework and lessons she'd assigned him, but he hadn't gotten a chance to read any of them. he kept hoping that there might be enough time before she had to bring them back, but there never was.
which was fine! hiyori gave him plenty of other books to read. he was just hoping to read the same books as her when she was reading them or at least right after she finished so they could talk about them. one of the best things about books, after all, is getting to discuss them! and he really wanted to do more of that.
he's grinning back when he takes them. )
Thank you! Do you need me to pay you back for them?
( he's sure she can afford them, but it's the principle of the matter! he's making money these days, so it's only fair. )
[ Accidents happen and at least he had the decency to look embarrassed, unlike a certain sweaty-palmed someone that will not be named!
More importantly, Yukine is visibly glowing at his gift and it fills Hiyori with a happy warmth that spreads from her chest to the tips of her fingers and toes. Though she knows that physically, he won't grow any further than the age he is right now, she thought it was important for him to continue his studies — something he wholeheartedly agreed with, by the way he devoured every text-book she handed over.
Sometimes, she found herself wondering what it would be like to go to school with Yukine; if he were alive. Would they have been friends if they met under those circumstances like they are now? Possibly. Probably? He was handsome, so Hiyori was certain he would have been popular with the girls, at the very least.
— Whoa. Just where did that thought come from?
A mental slap to the face before chalking it up to the heat was enough to pull her back to the present — quickly dismissing his question about payment with a wave of her hand. ]
You're welcome! And no way! I bought these for you, they're a gift!
